Dual SIM + eSIM Setup Guide
Running two SIMs simultaneously — your home physical SIM for calls and a travel eSIM for data — is the ideal setup for international travel. Here's how to configure it correctly.

Step-by-step fixes
1
Install your travel eSIM (keep physical SIM in)
Do not remove your physical home SIM. Install the travel eSIM by scanning the QR code from Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Your phone now has two active lines.
2
Set the travel eSIM as your cellular data line
iOS: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select your travel eSIM. Android: Settings → Network → SIM Manager → Data SIM → select eSIM. This routes internet traffic through your travel plan, not your home SIM.
3
Keep your home SIM as the default voice/call line
iOS: Settings → Cellular → Default Voice Line → select home SIM. Android: Settings → Network → SIM Manager → Calls → select home SIM. Incoming and outgoing calls still use your home number.
4
Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM only
Enable data roaming on your eSIM line. You do NOT need data roaming on your home SIM — that would cause roaming charges from your home carrier. Only the eSIM line needs data roaming on.
5
Test by loading a website
With both SIMs active, open a browser and load a page. Check that the data counter in LTE.app shows data being used from the travel plan. If data still comes from your home SIM, recheck step 2.
Frequently asked questions
Will I still receive calls and texts from home when using a travel eSIM?
Yes. With dual SIM setup, your home physical SIM stays active for calls and SMS. Your number does not change. People call your home number as normal — you just receive it while abroad, routed through your home carrier voice plan.
Will my home carrier charge me roaming fees with this setup?
Your home carrier charges roaming fees based on data usage through your home SIM. With the travel eSIM set as your data SIM, your home carrier sees zero data usage — just the call/SMS activity from their SIM. No data roaming charges.
Can I use iMessage and FaceTime with dual SIM?
Yes. iMessage and FaceTime are linked to your phone number (on your home SIM). They continue to work normally. The travel eSIM simply carries the internet traffic for these apps without affecting which number is used.
