What is an eSIM? A complete guide for travelers

Everything you need to know about eSIM technology — how it works, which phones support it, and why it's better than a physical SIM when traveling.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone. Instead of a physical plastic card, it's a small chip that can be reprogrammed with different carrier profiles — without ever opening your phone.

When you buy an eSIM plan from LTE.app, you receive a QR code. You scan it in your phone's settings, and within a minute you have a fully active data connection in your destination country.

Which phones support eSIM?

Most modern smartphones do:

  • iPhone: XS and newer (2018+)
  • Samsung Galaxy: S20 and newer
  • Google Pixel: 3 and newer
  • Other Android: Most flagship devices from 2020 onwards

To check yours: go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) and look for "Add eSIM" or "Add a Data Plan". If you see it, you're good to go.

Why use an eSIM instead of a local SIM?

No airport queues. eSIM plans are bought and installed from your phone — before you even board. You land with data already waiting.

Keep your home number active. Your regular SIM stays in place. You can still receive calls and texts from home while using your eSIM for data.

No roaming shock. You pay a fixed price for a fixed amount of data. No surprise bill at the end of the month.

Works in restricted countries. Some countries (Turkey, India, UAE) make it hard to buy a local SIM after arrival. eSIM pre-activation sidesteps that problem entirely.

How does LTE.app deliver your eSIM?

  1. Browse plans for your destination and pick one
  2. Pay with card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay
  3. Your QR code appears instantly on the confirmation page
  4. Scan it in Settings before you travel
  5. Toggle the eSIM on when you land

No account required. No email needed. The QR code is yours to save and use.

A note on installation timing

Always install your eSIM at home, over Wi-Fi — before you travel. Some countries block access to eSIM provider systems from within their borders. Installing first solves this completely.

Once installed, the eSIM sits dormant on your device until you activate it at your destination.
