How to avoid roaming charges completely in 2026

Roaming bills from your home carrier are entirely avoidable. This guide explains exactly what causes them and the settings that prevent them.

How roaming charges actually work

Your home carrier bills you for roaming when their SIM is used to connect to foreign carrier networks. The key word is "their SIM." If your home carrier's SIM is the active data line, every megabyte you use abroad flows through their billing system.

Most home carrier roaming plans charge $10–$15 per day for a data pass. Do the math on a two-week trip: $140–$210 in roaming fees before you make a single call.

The two-step fix

Step 1: Buy a travel eSIM for your destination (lte.app — select your country, choose data size, receive QR instantly).

Step 2: Set the travel eSIM as your active data line before you land.

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select your travel eSIM On Android: Settings → Network → SIM Manager → Data SIM → select eSIM

That's it. Your home carrier sees zero data usage. Zero roaming charges.

What about calls?

Your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS. Depending on your home carrier's plan, you may be charged per-minute for incoming calls abroad. Check your home plan.

To avoid call roaming entirely: enable Wi-Fi Calling on your home SIM (Settings → Cellular → home SIM → Wi-Fi Calling: On). Calls then route over your eSIM data — no separate roaming charges.

The one mistake people make

They buy the eSIM but forget to change the data line setting. The home SIM stays as the data line. All data goes through the home carrier. Roaming bill arrives as normal.

The setting to check: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data (iPhone) or SIM Manager → Data SIM (Android). It must show your travel eSIM, not your home SIM.

Emergency check at the airport

Landed somewhere? Before connecting to airport Wi-Fi, open Settings and confirm your eSIM is the active data line. If it isn't, switch it now — before any data touches your home SIM.
