How to Check If Your Phone Is eSIM Compatible

Before buying a travel eSIM, confirm your device supports it. Here are three ways to check — the definitive method works on any phone in under 30 seconds.

Method 1: Check your phone settings (most reliable)

  1. 1
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan. If this option exists, your iPhone supports eSIM.
  2. 2
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. If this option exists, your Samsung supports eSIM.
  3. 3
Google Pixel: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → "+" or "Add SIM." If you see an eSIM option, your Pixel supports eSIM.
  4. 4
If the option does not appear, your device does not support eSIM or your carrier has not enabled it.

Method 2: Check your EID number

Every eSIM-capable phone has an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number. Find it at: - iPhone: Settings → General → About → scroll to EID. If EID is listed, your phone supports eSIM. - Android: Settings → About Phone → SIM Status or IMEI — look for "EID." Its presence confirms eSIM hardware.

Method 3: Check the device compatibility list

LTE.app maintains a full list of eSIM-compatible devices at lte.app/device-compatibility. Each device listing includes: - Whether the device supports eSIM - How many eSIM profiles it can store - Whether dual SIM (eSIM + physical SIM simultaneously) is supported - Step-by-step installation instructions specific to that model

💡
Quick reference for popular devices: iPhone XS and later = eSIM supported. Samsung Galaxy S20 and later = eSIM supported. Google Pixel 3 and later = eSIM supported.

What to do if your phone does not support eSIM

  1. 1
Purchase a local SIM card at your destination — most airports have SIM kiosks.
  2. 2
Use hotel Wi-Fi and a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device.
  3. 3
Consider upgrading to an eSIM-compatible phone before your next trip — all flagship phones from 2020 onwards include eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

My carrier says my phone has eSIM but I cannot find it in settings. Why?
Some carriers lock eSIM functionality or require calling to activate it on your account. Contact your carrier and ask them to enable eSIM on your line. This is distinct from device eSIM support — both the device and the carrier account must have eSIM active.
Does eSIM compatibility depend on the country I bought my phone in?
Yes. Some carrier-sold phones (especially in the US) have eSIM hardware disabled via software. Unlocked or direct-from-manufacturer phones are more likely to have full eSIM functionality globally.
If my phone supports eSIM, do I need to do anything to activate it?
No hardware activation is needed. eSIM is always-on at the hardware level. You simply install a plan (via QR code) when you want to use it.
