Step-by-step fixes
1
Manually select a Japanese carrier
Japan has three major networks: NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and au/KDDI. Your LTE.app plan partners with one or more of these. If automatic selection fails, manually select each carrier: Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → Automatic off → try NTT Docomo first, then SoftBank.
2
Enable data roaming immediately after landing
Japan airports (Narita NRT, Haneda HND, Kansai KIX, Chubu NGO) have strong carrier coverage. Enable data roaming before leaving the plane. Settings → Cellular → eSIM line → Data Roaming: On.
3
Check you are not in a basement or underground area
Tokyo's extensive underground train network (Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway) has variable carrier coverage. If you have no signal underground, this is normal — surface and retry. LTE coverage on platforms improves year on year.
4
Restart your phone after landing in Japan
A full restart after international flights gives the modem a clean slate to register to Japanese carriers. Hold power → restart → wait 2 minutes for carrier registration.
5
Use Smart Coach for automatic diagnosis
Open LTE.app and tap Smart Coach. It checks your APN settings, roaming state, and carrier connection automatically — even without mobile data — and walks you through the exact fix for your device and carrier.

Which carriers does LTE.app use in Japan?
LTE.app Japan plans use NTT Docomo and SoftBank partner networks, covering over 99% of Japan's populated areas. In rural areas (Hokkaido countryside, Tohoku mountains), Docomo has the widest coverage.
Does eSIM work on Japan's Shinkansen trains?
Yes. The Shinkansen (bullet train) network has good LTE coverage along major corridors (Tokyo–Osaka, Tokyo–Fukuoka). Tunnels briefly interrupt signal. Your eSIM reconnects automatically when exiting tunnels.
Will my eSIM work in Kyoto, Osaka, and rural Japan?
Major cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Sapporo) have excellent LTE coverage. Rural areas and mountain regions may have weaker signal — Docomo generally has the best rural reach. Your LTE.app plan covers all three major networks.
