Do You Need Wi-Fi to Activate an eSIM?
Yes — but only during the initial QR scan. After installation, your eSIM does not need Wi-Fi to work. Here's exactly when you need internet and when you don't.
When you DO need Wi-Fi (during installation)
Scanning the QR code downloads the eSIM carrier profile from your provider's server over the internet. Your phone needs an internet connection to complete this download. This means:
- Install your eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before travelling — the safest approach. - Or install at the airport using airport Wi-Fi. - Or install on the plane using onboard Wi-Fi if available.
You do NOT need cellular data for installation — home Wi-Fi or any Wi-Fi connection works.
When you do NOT need Wi-Fi (after installation)
Once the eSIM profile is installed, it works independently. Activating the plan (turning it on when you land), receiving carrier signal, and using data all happen without Wi-Fi. The eSIM is registered on the carrier network directly — no ongoing internet connection required to maintain the registration.
Best practice: install before you travel
- 1Buy your plan on lte.app.
- 2Receive the QR code instantly in your email and on the confirmation page.
- 3Scan the QR at home over your home Wi-Fi.
- 4The eSIM profile installs on your phone.
- 5When you land, turn on data roaming and enable the eSIM line. Done.
- 6No airport Wi-Fi needed. No rush. No stress.
What if I forgot to install before travelling?
- 1Find free Wi-Fi at the airport (most international airports have it).
- 2Open your LTE.app order confirmation email.
- 3Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → scan.
- 4Installation completes in 30–60 seconds.
- 5Toggle data roaming on and you're online.
