eSIM Travel Checklist
Print this or save it. The 5 minutes you spend before your trip prevents the 2-hour connectivity nightmare at the airport.
1 week before departure
- 1Check your phone is eSIM compatible: Settings → Cellular — look for "Add eSIM" option.
- 2Check your phone is carrier-unlocked: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions.
- 3Buy your eSIM plan on lte.app — choose destination and duration.
- 4Scan the QR code at home over Wi-Fi and install the eSIM profile.
- 5Label the plan clearly (e.g., "Japan Travel Jan 2026") in your phone settings.
The night before departure
- 1Confirm the eSIM profile is installed: Settings → Cellular → check your plan appears.
- 2Set the travel eSIM as your data line: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select eSIM.
- 3Keep home SIM as voice/call line: Settings → Cellular → Default Voice → home SIM.
- 4Download offline maps for your destination in Google Maps or Maps.me.
- 5Download any content (podcasts, Netflix shows) for the flight over Wi-Fi.
At the airport / on arrival
- 1Enable data roaming on the eSIM line: Settings → Cellular → eSIM → Data Roaming: On.
- 2Toggle airplane mode on for 30 seconds, then off — forces carrier registration.
- 3Wait 2 minutes, then load a webpage to confirm data is working.
- 4Open LTE.app — check your plan status and remaining data.
- 5If no data: check that the eSIM is set as the Cellular Data line, not your home SIM.
Common mistakes to avoid
- 1Mistake 1: Installing the eSIM at the destination — some countries block eSIM provider systems. Install at home.
- 2Mistake 2: Forgetting to enable data roaming — this is the #1 cause of eSIM not working.
- 3Mistake 3: Home SIM still set as data line — all data goes through expensive roaming.
- 4Mistake 4: Scanning the QR code twice — most QRs are single-use. Do not scan on multiple devices.
- 5Mistake 5: Deleting the eSIM profile by accident — removal is permanent. Only delete when intentional.
Having trouble? Smart Coach diagnoses automatically.
Open LTE.app and tap Smart Coach. It checks your APN settings, roaming state, and carrier connection automatically — even without mobile data.
Frequently asked questions
When should I activate my eSIM plan?
Install the eSIM profile at home (QR scan) well before travel. Activate the plan (turn on data roaming and switch to the eSIM data line) when you land. The plan validity window typically starts on first connection to a local carrier.
What if my eSIM is not working when I land?
Check in order: 1) data roaming on, 2) eSIM set as cellular data line, 3) toggle airplane mode. If still failing, open LTE.app and use Smart Coach — it runs an automatic diagnostic and tells you exactly what to fix.
