How to Turn On Data Roaming on Android

Android data roaming settings vary by manufacturer. Here are the exact paths for Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and stock Android — the three most common Android configurations for travel.

Samsung Galaxy — SIM Manager path

  1. 1
Settings → Connections → SIM Manager.
  2. 2
Tap your travel eSIM or local SIM from the list.
  3. 3
    Toggle Mobile Data: ON.
  4. 4
    Tap Data Roaming: ON.
  5. 5
Back in SIM Manager, tap "Data SIM" and select your travel eSIM as the preferred data line.
💡
Samsung uses SIM Manager instead of standard Android settings — if you search "data roaming" in the Samsung settings search bar, it takes you directly there.

Google Pixel — Network & Internet path

  1. 1
    Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs.
  2. 2
Tap your travel eSIM from the list.
  3. 3
    Toggle Roaming: ON.
  4. 4
Back in SIMs, tap "Preferred SIM" → Data → select your travel eSIM.

Stock Android (OnePlus, Motorola, others)

  1. 1
Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile Network (or Cellular).
  2. 2
If dual SIM, select your travel eSIM from the SIM list.
  3. 3
Toggle Data Roaming or International Roaming: ON.
  4. 4
Set this SIM as the default data SIM in SIM preferences.

Confirm data roaming is working

  1. 1
A carrier name appears in the Android status bar.
  2. 2
The 4G, LTE, or 5G indicator appears.
  3. 3
A browser page loads without Wi-Fi.
  4. 4
If using dual SIM, confirm the data indicator is next to your travel eSIM, not your home SIM.
Having trouble? Smart Coach diagnoses automatically.
Open LTE.app and tap Smart Coach. It checks your APN settings, roaming state, and carrier connection automatically — even without mobile data.

Frequently asked questions

I cannot find the data roaming setting on my Android. Where is it?
Search "data roaming" in your phone's settings search bar — it takes you directly to the correct screen regardless of manufacturer. On Samsung, it is inside SIM Manager → your SIM line → Data Roaming.
My Android shows the travel eSIM carrier name but no internet. What is wrong?
Data roaming is likely off. Enable it in SIM Manager (Samsung) or Network & Internet → SIMs (Pixel). Also confirm the travel eSIM is set as your preferred data SIM — if your home SIM is selected for data, the eSIM shows signal but passes no traffic.
Does Android turn off data roaming automatically after returning home?
No. Data roaming stays as you set it. Your home SIM will reconnect to your home network automatically, but the roaming toggle stays ON. This is safe for home SIM cards with unlimited domestic data.
