How to Turn On Data Roaming on iPhone
Data roaming is the setting that allows your iPhone's mobile data to work on international or third-party carrier networks. Here is exactly how to enable it for a travel eSIM or home carrier international plan.
Enable data roaming on iPhone (all models)
- 1Open the Settings app.
- 2Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data on some regional iOS versions).
- 3If you have two SIMs, tap the name of the SIM you want to configure (your travel eSIM or local SIM).
- 4Toggle Data Roaming to ON (green).
- 5A warning may appear about potential carrier charges — this only applies to your home SIM without an international plan. For a travel eSIM, tap OK.
💡
If you see two SIM lines listed, configure roaming separately for each line. Your travel eSIM needs roaming ON; your home SIM should have roaming OFF unless your carrier has an international add-on.
Set your travel eSIM as the active data line
- 1Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data.
- 2Select your travel eSIM from the list (not your home SIM).
- 3Your iPhone will now route all mobile data through the travel eSIM.
How to tell if data roaming is working
- 1A carrier name appears in the top status bar (not "No Service" or "Searching").
- 2Safari or Chrome loads a webpage without Wi-Fi.
- 3The LTE, 4G, or 5G indicator appears next to the carrier name.
Troubleshooting: data roaming enabled but still no internet
- 1Toggle airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off — forces a fresh carrier scan.
- 2Confirm the travel eSIM (not your home SIM) is selected under Cellular Data.
- 3Check the eSIM plan is still active and has remaining data in the LTE.app dashboard.
- 4Try manually selecting a carrier: Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → Automatic off → choose a carrier.
Having trouble? Smart Coach diagnoses automatically.
Open LTE.app and tap Smart Coach. It checks your APN settings, roaming state, and carrier connection automatically — even without mobile data.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Data Roaming toggle on iPhone?
Settings → Cellular → [tap your SIM line if dual SIM] → Data Roaming. The toggle is near the top of that page.
My iPhone does not show a Data Roaming toggle. Why?
Some carrier-locked iPhones or certain carrier configuration profiles hide the Data Roaming toggle and manage it automatically. If you cannot find the toggle, contact your carrier or use LTE.app Smart Coach for a diagnostic.
Will enabling data roaming drain my battery faster?
Slightly, because the modem is registering to a different carrier network. In practice the difference is under 5% and not noticeable during normal use.
Can I set data roaming to turn on automatically when I arrive in a country?
iOS does not have an automatic roaming toggle. You need to enable it manually before or after landing. Smart Coach in LTE.app can remind you and guide you through the steps on arrival.
